Jewelry: Part II
A story with no meaning

The man behind the counter looked over the ring, thoughtfully, for what seemed like forever. He just kept turning it over, squinting, holding the diamond in the light, as if he wasn't sure what it was. Jenny was getting antsy; she just wanted him to hurry up.

"I'll give you three hundred dollars for it," he announced.

Jenny knew that the her engagement ring was worth more than that-- a LOT more than that-- but it was the best offer she'd gotten for it. She sighed, realizing that she had no choice in the matter; she needed the money, and the ring was the only thing she had that was any value to her. It made her sad, because the ring was the only thing she had that was any value to her; but what else could she do? Jeff had demanded that she pay him by tommorow, and by this point, she knew better than to refuse.

She scratched her arms, her expression as if she was the saddest woman in the world. She wasn't sure she wasn't.

"Fine," she said. "It's a deal."

She left the pawn shop with a pocket full of cash, and two empty hands.

A series of very short, loosely connected stories written for a school assignment, all revolving around one comment element: jewelry. An exercise in taking an idea and running with it, for the most part.
